Marshawn Kneeland’s tragic death at the age of 24 on Thursday has brought the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL community together in mourning. Kneeland, who was selected by Dallas in 2024, played in 18 games and was remembered by teammates, coaches, and fans as a talented and valued member of the team.
Dallas Cowboys Confirm Kneeland’s Passing
The Cowboys made an official statement expressing their sorrow:
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team said in a statement. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
Following an impressive college career at Western Michigan University, Kneeland was selected by the Cowboys, where he was recognized for his tireless work ethic and leadership both on and off the field.
Tributes to Kneeland poured in on social media from teammates, coaches, and NFL players following the tragic announcement.
At Kneeland’s former high school, quarterback Dak Prescott spoke to CBS News Texas during a dedication ceremony.
“I hurt. Heavy, heavy heart today,” Prescott told CBS News Texas. “I hurt for Marshawn, I hurt for his family, I hurt for his girlfriend, and I hurt for every single one of my teammates. This is a pain you don’t wish upon anybody”.
Solomon Thomas, a defensive lineman for the Cowboys, shared an emotional post on Instagram in tribute to his deceased teammate:
“Brother Marshawn, I love you. I wish you knew it was going to be okay. I wish you knew the pain wouldn’t last and how loved you are. I wish you knew how bad we wanted you to stay. My heart breaks for you and your loved ones. We will lift your spirit up every day.”
The Defensive Line, a nonprofit that focuses on suicide prevention and mental health awareness, was founded by Thomas, who has always been a vocal advocate for the well-being of players outside of the game.
Authorities Confirm Circumstances Surrounding His Death
Frisco Police reported that Kneeland died from a gunshot wound that seemed to have been self-inflicted. At the beginning of the day, officers responded to a welfare check at his house.
According to reports, Kneeland had been in a car accident near the southbound lanes of a local parkway before authorities’ arrival. Police say that Kneeland fled on foot and was later found dead. The investigation is still ongoing, and officials have provided no further details.
NFL and Team Extend Support
The NFL released a statement expressing condolences and confirming that the league has offered support to the Cowboys organization:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of the Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends, and his teammates. We have been in contact with the Cowboys and have offered support and counseling resources.”
A Promising Career Cut Short
The story of Kneeland’s journey into the NFL was marked by perseverance and a passion for the game. He became a popular choice among fans after being drafted by the Cowboys in 2024 due to his high energy, determination, and humble demeanor. Kneeland’s work ethic and leadership in the locker room made him famous for embodying the blue-collar spirit of Dallas football. The Cowboys’ defensive line and those who knew him personally are left with a void after his untimely death.
