In the war-torn town of Toretsk, situated in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Ukrainian Azov fighters and Russian infantry units are battling closely in the frontline city. This relentless struggle is centered around 12th Special Forces Brigade ‘Azov’, which is renowned for its endurance and precision under fire.
The 12th Azov Brigade’s official English-language channel has recently released a video that captures the gritty reality of modern urban warfare. In this second installment of footage, the reconnaissance platoon of the 2nd Battalion is depicted clearing buildings, engaging in room-to-room firefights, and flushing out entrenched Russian forces who have converted basements into makeshift strongholds.
The Battle Beneath the Surface
The enemy infantry has a habit of occupying basements in Toretsk, using their natural cover to conceal their movements, stockpile ammunition, and conduct ambushes. Despite the narrow hallways and shadowy rooms offering few options, every door could conceal an enemy fighter waiting for the kill. Azov troops operate with precision and discipline, their objective being to eliminate the occupiers and guarantee every inch of Ukrainian soil. The soldiers move strategically, clearing one structure after another, mindful that any misstep could lead to a trap.
“You never know what awaits behind the next door or how many guns will be pointed at you,” says one Azov fighter in the video, describing the intensity of the combat in Toretsk.
Azov’s Legacy of Defiance
The story of the Azov Brigade is one of resilience. The unit, known internationally for their heroic 86-day defense of Mariupol in 2022, stood up to overwhelming odds in what became one of the most symbolic sieges of the Russian invasion. Many of those defenders, around 850 fighters, have been held in Russian captivity for over two years, enduring brutal conditions yet remaining unbroken in spirit.
Even after losing, the Brigade remains committed to rebuilding and fighting. Currently located in the Toretsk sector, their combat experience and adaptability are proving invaluable. The operations they conduct combine precision reconnaissance with urban warfare skills to confront an enemy who often hides in labyrinthine underground networks and bombed-out residential zones.
The Human Spirit Behind the Uniform
Despite the chaos and immediacy of combat, the footage also reveals a deeper truth – the unwavering determination and humanity of the Ukrainian soldiers. Even when they’re exhausted, their camaraderie, humor, and grit shine through. The ruins are filled with conversations, songs, and reflections on life and loss, as well as gunfire and explosions.
One line from the footage stands out:
“Train goes on dream, young king. Dream, think it, then manifest it. Dream, young queen. Dream, you.”
Despite the destruction, the message is both poetic and defiant, demonstrating Ukraine’s defenders’ enduring faith in a future beyond war.
Holding the Line
The battle for Toretsk is still ongoing, a symbol of the wider struggle in eastern Ukraine, where every meter gained costs a great deal of money. The Azov Brigade’s continued resistance serves as both a tactical and moral anchor for Ukraine’s defense effort. It is proof that even after years of attrition, the spirit of freedom and sovereignty refuses to die. As the world watches, the men and women of Azov continue their mission—not only to reclaim land but to reclaim dignity, standing as a living reminder that courage is often forged in the darkest corners of conflict.
